Note and Rest Duration
Lesson 3 - Note Duration Lesson
Note Duraton - - - - What is that?     The definition is: "the period of time during which something happens".  Lets say that you want to complete your next pass-off and you are wondering if there will be a pass-off round
during the next band class.  What you are wondering is if you will be able to perform your pass-off sometime inside that forty-five minute band class period.  You are hoping that you will have a small part of that band time to play your pass-off for the director.  The time you take to perform your pass-off will be about 30 seconds.

The duration of your pass-off perfomance is 30 seconds or 30 beats if you were counting one beat per second.  What would it be if you were counting 2 beats per second?  That's right - 60 beats.  Beats in music measure time and duration is that measured  period of time.

The duration of a whole note is 4 beats

The duration of a half note is 2 beats

The duration of a quarter note is 1 beat

The purpose of this lesson is to help you understand how notes represent the sound you make on your instrument that occupies time.

Lesson 4 - Rest Duration Lesson
Rest Duration or the "time period during which nothing happens"  is just as important as note duration.  In music, silence is measured just like sound.  It is very important to keep your concentration when there are rests in music so that you will  know exactly when to start your sound again.

The duration of a whole rest is 4 beats

The duration of a half rest is 2 beats

The duration of a quarter rest is 1 beat

The purpose of this lesson is to help you understand how notes represent the silence between the sounds you make on your instrument occupies time.
